In this lesson, we will focus on the personal pronouns ich / sie from two points of view. We will examine the text Die Zigeunerin closely to see how grammar contributes to its interpretation.

Verbs of communication

We work again only with sentences where Michela e the Gypsy Woman interact.

entgegenkommen (D), sich nähern (D), erkennen (A), an die Hand nehmen (A), 

berühren (A), sagen (D), mitkommen (D), begleiten (A), holen (A), folgen (D)

The order is determined by the text. Every verb determines which pronoun form is used (A=Akkusativ or D=Dativ).

Perspective 1: Michela Murgia speaks when she notices the gypsy woman.

• Eine Person kommt mir entgegen. (A person approaches me.)

• Sie nähert sich mir langsam. (She slowly moves closer.)

• Ich weiß, sie ist eine Zigeunerin, (I know she's a gypsy)

• ... auch wenn ich sie nicht gut erkennen kann. (... even though I can't quite make her out.)

• Sie nimmt mich an die Hand. (She takes my hand.)

• Sobald sie mich berührt, werde ich wieder zum Kind. (As soon as she touches me, I turn back into a child.)

• Sie sagt zu mir: „Komm mit mir. Sei unbesorgt.“ (She says to me, "Come with me. Don't worry.")

• Sie begleitet mich. (She accompanies me.)

• Sie ist gekommen, um mich zu holen. (She has come to get me.)

• Ich folge ihr und halte ihre Hand. (I follow her and hold her hand.)

Perspective 2: The gypsy woman speaks when she notices Michela.

• Ich komme ihr entgegen.

• Ich nähere mich ihr langsam.

• Sie weiß, ich bin eine Zigeunerin,

• auch wenn sie mich nicht gut erkennen kann.

• Ich nehme sie an die Hand.

• Sobald ich sie berühre, wird sie wieder zum Kind.

• Ich sage zu ihr: „Komm mit mir. Sei unbesorgt.“

• Ich begleite sie.

• Ich bin gekommen, um sie zu holen.

• Sie folgt mir und hält meine Hand.

How pronouns change

• Michela denkt: Ich weiß, sie ist eine Zigeunerin.
• Die Zigeunerin denkt: Sie kann mich nicht gut erkennen.
• Michela denkt: Sie nähert sich mir langsam.
• Die Zigeunerin denkt: Sie folgt mir.

• Die Zigeunerin denkt: Sie weiß, ich bin eine Zigeunerin.
• Michela denkt: Ich kann sie nicht gut erkennen.
• Die Zigeunerin denkt: Ich nähere mich ihr langsam.
• Michela denkt: Ich folge ihr.
