Unit 4 – Grammatik

Text & Grammatik

In this lesson, we will focus on the personal pronouns ich, sie (plural) and Sie.

This grammar lesson begins with examples taken from Andrea Molesini's literary work, Der SpatzSee also: Der Spatz (Wortschatz).

ich ⇔ sie

Exercise 1 – Observe the Subject: Complete the sentences with ich or sie.

___ stehe auf.
___ gehe durch die Mauer.
___ bin draußen.
___ sehen mich nicht.
___ spielen Karten.
Wie schön ist der Himmel!
___ genieße den Regen.
___ bin frei.

Notice how the subject changes. The escape begins with ich, is interrupted by sie, and ends happily with ich again.

The shift from ich to sie reflects the prisoner's sense of tension when he hears a group of guards talking very close to him.

Once the prisoner realises that the guards are distracted, the sentences revert to ich. The group fades into the background. The individual becomes central again.

Now, the scene changes. We are no longer in a prison, we are in a classroom. The following examples are taken from Marco Lodoli's text Das Warum und das Darum.

ich ⇔ sie / Sie ⇒ ich

Exercise 2 – Observe the Subject: Complete the sentences with ich or sie or Sie.

___ blättere im Buch.
___ bin unschlüssig.
___ sind eifrig und wollen lernen.
___ haben ihre Hefte schon offen vor sich liegen und halten den Bleistift in der Hand.
In der Tür des Klassenzimmers steht der Schulleiter.
Fangen ___ schon an!
___ gehe an die Tafel und beginne zu schreiben: das Warum und das Darum.

The text starts again with ich. The teacher stands alone. He is uncertain. He hesitates. In front of him sit the students. He is isolated, and must lead a group to which he feels he does not belong.

Then something changes. The headmaster appears and addresses the man with Sie.

This formal address reminds the teacher of who he is supposed to be. He becomes aware of his role. He is part of a larger group — the Lehrerschaft — and he can see his colleagues behind the headmaster. It is at this point that he starts acting like a teacher. He stands up and starts writing on the blackboard.

We can describe the movement like this:

ich ⇔ sie
but
Sie ⇒ ich

The formal Sie

The first text is about prison guards allowing a prisoner to escape.
In the second, a teacher first arrives unprepared for his lesson and then loses control of his class on a school trip.

In both situations, the question of responsibility arises, and one might consider the intervention of an authority to be necessary or appropriate.

A director or judge would tell the guards or the teacher: Sie sind schuld. Sie waren abgelenkt.

In both cases, the pronoun used would be Sie.

In German, the formal Sie is grammatically plural, even when referring to one person.

It is used when addressing someone:

  • not as a private individual (du),

  • but as a representative of a social or professional role.
