In this lesson, we will focus on personal pronouns. We will examine the text Alles ist perfekt closely to see how grammar emerges from it.

Personal pronouns: wir – ich – sie (pl.)

1. wir – the group

The text begins with wir, the pronoun of the first person plural.

• Wir haben gefrühstückt. (We had breakfast.)

• Wir wollen alle zusammen losgehen. (We want to leave all together.)

2. ich – the individual

Then something changes: the narrator is no longer with the group.

• Ich bleibe zurück. (I stay behind.)

3. sie – the others (no longer with me)

Immediately after that, the plural pronoun sie appears and refers to the others, separated from ich.

• Plötzlich sind sie weg. (Suddenly they are gone.)

4. ich – alone in the world

The narrator goes on acting alone.

• Ich gehe die Hauptstraße lang. (I walk along the main street.)

• Ich sehe Menschen und Autos, doch meine Reisegruppe sehe ich nicht mehr. (I see people and cars, but I no longer see my travel group.)

Personal pronouns: ich – sie (pl.) – er – es – sie (sg.)

4. ich – the autonomous individual

Ermanno is now on his own and keeps on moving.

• Ich durchquere die Stadt. Bis ans Ende, bis an den Strand. (I cross the city. To the very end, to the beach.)

5. ich – an observer and narrator who notices the others

• Alles ist perfekt: das Licht, das Wasser, die Menschen. (Everything is perfect: the light, the water, the people.)

• Ein Opa spielt Ball mit seinem Enkel. (A grandfather plays ball with his grandson.)

• Ein Mädchen sitzt neben mir auf dem Mäuerchen. (A girl sits next to me on the little wall.)

• Sie ist noch ein Kind, und doch kein Kind mehr. (She is still a child, and yet no longer a child.)

The personal pronouns sie (pl.), er, es, sie (sg.) are partly implicit:

• die Menschen → sie (pl.)

• ein Opa → er

• das Mädchen, das noch ein Kind ist → es

• das Mädchen, das kein Kind mehr ist → sie (sg.)

Personal pronouns: ich – du

6. ich – du/dir

The narrator is no longer alone. A relationship begins.

• Ich sage es nur dir. (I say it only to you.)

• Ich will Sprachen studieren wie du. (I want to study languages, just like you.)

Summary

• ich → alone, on the move

• sie (pl.) → the others

• er → a man

• es → a child

• sie (sg.) → a young girl

• ich / du → acceptance, relationship → wir
