Part I
Find these words in the text that follows.
Ich bin in der Schule.
Vor mir sitzen die Schüler.
Ich blättere im Buch.
Ich muss alles gründlich erklären.
Diese jungen Menschen sind eifrig und wollen lernen.
Viele haben ihre Hefte schon offen vor sich liegen und halten den Bleistift in der Hand.
Ich bin unschlüssig. Was soll ich unterrichten?
Jede Seite ist anders, es gibt Kapitel über Botanik, Chemie und Englisch.
I am at school.
The students sit in front of me.
I flick through the book.
I must explain everything carefully and thoroughly.
These young people are eager to learn.
Many of them already have their notebooks open in front of them and are holding a pencil.
I hesitate. What should I teach them?
Every page is different: some chapters are about botany, some about chemistry and some about English.
Part II
Find these words in the text that follows.
Ich weiß nichts, aber ich könnte von meiner Reise nach Paris erzählen.
Oder davon, wie ich einmal mit einem gebrochenen Bein im Krankenhaus lag.
Die Schüler schieben ihre Tische in Richtung Tafel, um besser hören zu können.
Ein Mädchen legt ihr Handy auf den Lehrertisch.
„Das ist doch in Ordnung, wenn wir aufnehmen, was Sie sagen, nicht wahr?”
„Stimmt es, dass Sie uns heute das Warum und das Darum erklären?”, fragt ein Junge.
„Können wir anfangen?” Er schlägt seine Hand auf den Tisch.
I don't know anything, but I could tell them about my trip to Paris.
Or I could talk about the time I was in hospital with a broken leg.
The students push their desks towards the board so they can hear better.
A girl puts her phone on the teacher’s desk.
“It's OK if we record what you say, isn't it?”
“Is it true that you’re going to explain the reasons behind everything to us today?” a boy asks.
“Can we start?” He slaps his hand on the desk.
Part III
Find these words in the text that follows.
Ich sehe auf die Uhr, die hinten im Klassenzimmer an der Wand hängt.
Bis zum Ende der Stunde fehlen noch fünfzig Minuten.
In der Tür des Klassenzimmers steht der Schulleiter.
„Versuchen Sie keine Schliche”, mahnt er.
„Gehen Sie nicht um den heißen Brei herum, fangen Sie schon an”.
„Wir sind alle gespannt”.
Hinter ihm erkenne ich die Gestalten weiterer Lehrer.
Ich gehe an die Tafel und beginne zu schreiben: das Warum und das Darum.
Alle schreiben diese weißen Wörter in ihre Hefte ab.
I look at the clock on the wall at the back of the classroom.
There are still fifty minutes until the end of the lesson.
The principal is standing in the doorway.
'Don't try any tricks,' he warns.
'Don't beat around the bush — just begin.'
We are all curious.
I recognise the figures of other teachers behind him.
I walk to the board and start writing: 'the why and the therefore'.
Everyone copies these white words into their notebooks.
